Tomalt. from Nathuatl word, language of the Aztecs is today known as tomato fruit (Solanum lycopersicum L.) was introduced to France in the 16th century, shortly after its discovery in Mexico. It was first used as an ornamental plant for almost 3 centuries. It is only from the 18th century that tomato was used as a fruit-vegetable, firstly in Provence, where it was called pomme d'amour (love apple) or pomme d'or (golden apple after pomodoro). Today, tomato has become a real emblem of the region of Provence, in France.
The Aztecs recognized many therapeutic qualities in the tomato including its use treat skin disorders. This first observation has identified by the redness of tomato skin, associated to the inflammation of the human skin (when reddened).
